Mr Potato

The Recipe Repository

Ages: 3-5

Less than 30 minutes

Grownup needed

This is a creative hands-on art activity for preschoolers. It's easy to prepare and effectively develops children's hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Children will explore and experience different vegetables through multiple senses including sight, touch, and smell, while discovering early learning concepts such as shapes and colours.

Materials Needed

  • Vegetables (any available in your home)
  • Potato
  • Tomato
  • Toothpicks
  • Fruit knife
An assortment of food items and utensils are arranged on a light wood-grained table, likely for preparing a meal or snack. A white bear-shaped dish contains broccoli florets, blueberries, a small carrot, and a section of cucumber. Separate from the dish are a single tomato, a raw potato, a bundle of wooden toothpicks, and a small paring knife with a gray handle. The image suggests the ingredients and tools for a healthy and simple food preparation.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Break the toothpicks in half and insert them into the potato.

Two hands are shown in the process of inserting wooden toothpicks into a raw, unpeeled russet potato. The potato rests on the left palm, while the right hand carefully places a toothpick. Several toothpicks are already sticking out of the potato's surface. A partially visible white dish with broccoli florets sits in the upper right corner, suggesting other ingredients for a recipe are nearby. The background is a light wood-grained surface. The image likely demonstrates a preparation step for a recipe, perhaps for baking or roasting the potato.
Step 2

Choose your favourite vegetables and use the fruit knife to cut them into facial feature shapes (adult assistance needed here).

Two hands interact with a white, bear-shaped dish containing chopped vegetables and blueberries on a light wood-grained table. The left hand steadies the dish while the right hand uses a small paring knife to cut a piece of tomato. The dish contains broccoli florets, blueberries, a small, whole carrot, sliced cucumbers, and pieces of a chopped tomato. The scene suggests food preparation, likely for a healthy snack or meal.
Step 3

Insert the vegetables onto the toothpicks to create your own Mr Potato character.

Two hands create a face on a potato using other food items. Broccoli florets are attached to the top of the potato with toothpicks to resemble hair. Two blueberries are secured as eyes, a slice of cucumber forms a smiling mouth, and small pieces of carrot create a nose and ears. The hands arrange and adjust the features on the light wooden table surface. This video appears to demonstrate a fun and creative activity, possibly aimed at children, for making food art.
Step 4

Try using different vegetables to create other vegetable characters. Remember to cook and eat the vegetables when you're finished playing!

A whimsical face is created using a potato and other vegetables arranged on a white, bear-shaped dish on a light wood-grained table. The potato forms the head, with blueberries for eyes, a small piece of carrot for a nose, and sliced tomatoes and cucumber forming a smiling mouth. Broccoli florets create a hair-like effect on top of the potato. A sliced tomato sits beside the dish. This playful arrangement is likely designed to make healthy eating more appealing, especially for children.
