Like Elsa, you can create your own snow for play that won't "melt" regardless of temperature, making it perfect for indoor fun in warm weather. This is an easy-to-prepare sensory art activity for children using just bicarbonate of soda and water. Children can use moulds to create various snow shapes or build their very own snowman.

Materials Needed

  • Plate
  • Cup
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • One cup of water
  • Spoon
  • Snowman decorations
Arranged on a light wood-grain surface are materials for a snowman-making activity. At the top, two clear glasses, one filled with water and the other empty, sit beside a clear plastic bag containing a white substance, likely fake snow. Below, on a clear rectangular tray, are various snowman components: a miniature red and white striped scarf with white pom-poms, a small red Santa hat, two light green pipe cleaner arm pieces, a small orange carrot nose, two black button eyes, and a cream-colored spoon. This image depicts the ingredients and accessories ready for assembling a miniature snowman.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Pour three cups of bicarbonate of soda onto the plate.

A hand pours white powder from a clear glass onto a clear plastic tray. The powder flows smoothly, creating a small pile on the tray's surface. The tray rests on a light wooden table. A small Santa Claus figurine and some white cotton are visible in the background, slightly out of focus.
Step 2

Next, pour one cup of water over the bicarbonate of soda.

A hand pours water from a clear glass onto a pile of white powder on a clear plastic tray. The water mixes with the powder, likely causing a reaction or change in consistency. The tray sits on a light wooden table. A small Santa Claus figurine and some white cotton are visible in the background, slightly blurred.
Step 3

Use the spoon to mix the bicarbonate of soda and water thoroughly.

On a clear rectangular tray placed on a light wood-grain table, a hand uses a cream-colored spoon to mix a white powdery substance, likely fake snow, with a clear liquid. A small pile of fluffy white cotton and a miniature Santa Claus figure are visible in the background, out of focus, suggesting this is part of a Christmas-themed craft activity. The mixture on the tray is being combined to likely create a moldable snow-like material. A small puddle of the clear liquid is visible on the left side of the tray.
Step 4

Shape the mixture into a snowman.

A small snowman made of two white balls, one stacked on top of the other, sits on a bed of white artificial snow spread across a clear rectangular tray. The background, a blend of light wood and a pale blue wall, is slightly out of focus. A small pile of white cotton and a miniature Santa Claus figurine are also visible, blurred in the background to the left. The image captures a simple, festive scene, likely a craft project or a decorative element.
Step 5

Now, add your favourite decorations to the snowman, and your bicarbonate of soda snowman is complete!

Hands are shown placing a red and white striped scarf around a small snowman made of white material, possibly snow or dough. The snowman is positioned on a bed of white, powdery material, resembling snow, on a clear tray. The tray rests on a light wooden surface. A small Santa Claus figurine is visible in the blurred background.
