Playful Learning

Ages: 3-5

30 minutes

Grownup needed

Help children maintain a proper pencil grip with just a rubber band! This simple trick helps beginning writers develop correct pencil-holding posture.

Materials Needed

  • White paper
  • Markers
  • Stamp sponge (or paintbrush)
  • Blue paint
  • Paint palette
Arranged on a light wood-grain surface are several art supplies: a blank sheet of white paper, a black marker pen, a small wooden stick with a yellow sponge tip, a tube of white glue or paint, and a white flower-shaped paint palette with empty wells. This image depicts a setup for an art or craft project, ready for materials to be added to the palette and used on the paper.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Download and print a template or create your own. Draw a cloud on white paper and write a letter inside it. Below the cloud, randomly write 7-11 copies of the same letter among other different letters.

A piece of white paper on a light wood-grain background presents a letter-finding game titled Rain Drop Dot: Letter R => Letter F. Two simple cloud outlines are drawn at the top, with the letter R inside the left cloud and the right cloud left empty. Below each cloud is a grid of seemingly random letters. The left grid contains many R s scattered among other letters, while the right grid has several F s. The instructions imply a game where the player connects the R s in the left grid to form raindrops and then finds and circles the corresponding F s in the right grid. This image depicts a simple educational game for children practicing letter recognition.
Step 2

Dip the stamp sponge in paint and search for matching letters below the cloud. When found, stamp those letters.

Two hands are interacting with a piece of white paper titled Rain Drop Dot: Letter R on a light wooden table. A hand at the bottom left holds the paper, while a hand on the right uses a small wooden stick with a yellow sponge tip dipped in blue paint to dab the letter R on the paper. A hand-drawn cloud with a large R inside sits at the top of the page. Below the cloud, a grid of letters is scattered, and several Rs have already been marked with blue dots. Step 3

Try different letters to make new letter raindrops and learn letters through play.

Two sheets of white paper, titled Rain Drop Dot: Letter R and Rain Drop Dot: Letter F, lie on a light wood-grain surface. Each sheet features a hand-drawn cloud at the top, containing the respective letter (R or F). Below each cloud, grids of letters are presented. All instances of R on the first sheet and F on the second sheet are marked with blue paint dots. This image depicts a completed letter recognition activity or game for children.

Note:

This engaging activity combines letter recognition with art, making learning more enjoyable for young children. The search-and-stamp approach helps develop both letter recognition and visual discrimination skills while keeping children actively involved in the learning process.
