Emotion Eggie Card

Playful Learning

Ages: 3-5

30 minutes

Grownup needed

Ages 3-5 are crucial for children's emotional cognitive development. During this period, children begin to understand and express their own emotions while recognising others' feelings. This emotional awareness development has a profound impact on children's social skills, learning, and psychological well-being. This activity helps children better understand expressions and emotions. You can conduct this activity at home with just some old cardboard.

Materials Needed

  • Card stock
  • Googly eyes
  • Pencil markers
  • Scissors
Craft supplies are arranged on a light wood-grain table. From left to right, there's a piece of brown cardboard, a small pile of googly eyes, a blue pencil, two white marker pens (one with a black cap and one with a red cap), and a pair of black scissors. These materials appear to be gathered for a children's craft project.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Take a piece of cardstock, draw an egg shape with a pencil and cut it out.

On a light wood-grain surface, two hands position a rectangular piece of brown cardboard. A blue pencil, held in the right hand, is drawing an oval shape onto the cardboard. This appears to be the beginning stage of a craft project.
Step 2

Use this egg card as a template to trace the same shape onto the remaining card stock. Cut out all the egg shapes.

Two hands are shown on a light wood-grained table. The left hand holds down a piece of brown cardboard while the right hand uses a blue pencil to carefully draw an oval shape on the cardboard. This scene suggests the initial steps of a crafting activity.
Step 3

Select one of the cut-out egg cards and cut it in half.

Several oval-shaped pieces of brown cardboard are scattered on a light wood-grain table. Two hands are in the frame, with one holding a piece of cardboard and the other using scissors to cut it. The action suggests the cardboard ovals are being prepared for a craft project.
Step 4

Use the bottom half of the cut egg card as a template to draw guidelines on the lower portions of the other egg cards.

On a light wood-grain table, several oval pieces of brown cardboard are visible. Two hands manipulate one of the ovals, which has a line drawn down its center. The right hand uses a blue pencil to continue drawing on the cardboard. Other similar cardboard ovals are scattered nearby. This scene suggests a craft project in progress.
Step 5

Using markers and googly eyes, create different expressions on your egg cards.

Nine oval-shaped pieces of cardboard, resembling potato shapes, are arranged on a light wood-grain table. Each cardboard potato has a different facial expression drawn on it, including happy, sad, angry, winking, surprised, and silly faces. Some have googly eyes attached. These appear to be part of a children's game or craft activity.
Step 6

Cut along the guidelines on your decorated egg cards.

On a light wood-grain table are several oval-shaped pieces of cardboard decorated with various facial expressions, similar to emojis. Two hands are visible; one holds a cardboard oval while the other uses scissors to cut it. The oval being cut has a partial face with a winking eye and a pointing hand drawn on it. This scene is likely part of a craft activity involving creating mix-and-match faces.
Step 7

Try mixing and matching these expression cards!

Two hands hold a length of bright teal yarn against a light wood-grain background. A simple overhand knot has been tied in the yarn. A small, folded piece of light purple pipe cleaner is visible at the top left corner, suggesting it might be used later in the project. The image appears to depict a stage in a crafting activity.
