Six round, flat objects, possibly made of dough or clay, are arranged on a white rectangular tray. Each object is decorated with a variety of small seeds and spices, creating different patterns. Some feature star anise at the center, while others have concentric circles or radiating lines of various colored seeds. The tray rests on a light wood-grained surface. This image likely depicts a craft or culinary activity.

Create unique artwork by combining seeds of different shapes and colours! This activity develops both hands-on skills and creativity. Join children in crafting your own artistic decorations using natural materials found at home!

Materials Needed

  • Large glass bowl
  • 250g salt
  • 500g flour
  • 250ml water
  • 20ml oil
  • tablespoon
  • seeds
  • (rice, wheat, beans, etc.)
  • spices
An assortment of ingredients is laid out on a light wood-grained surface, suggesting preparation for a recipe. A large, empty clear glass bowl sits to the left. Smaller clear glass bowls containing sugar, water, and flour are arranged to the right. A small yellow container holds oil, and a black measuring spoon lies nearby. A white, cat-shaped dish contains star anise, mung beans, and a mix of rice and sesame seeds. This image depicts the mise en place for a cooking or baking project.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Add 250g salt, 500g flour, and 250ml water to the large bowl in sequence.

A clear glass bowl, placed on a light wood-grained surface, contains the initial stages of a mixture. White flour, sugar, and a clear liquid, likely water, are visible but not yet fully combined. The ingredients appear layered, with the flour mostly on one side and the sugar dissolved into the water. This image represents the beginning stages of a recipe, before mixing.
Step 2

Add three tablespoons of oil to the bowl and knead the mixture into dough by hand.

A hand wearing a clear plastic glove holds a black measuring spoon containing a dark liquid, likely an extract or oil, over a clear glass bowl. The bowl, sitting on a light wood-grained surface, already contains flour, sugar, and a bit of clear liquid, presumably water. The dark liquid from the measuring spoon is about to be added to the other ingredients. This image captures a moment in the preparation of a recipe, specifically the addition of a key ingredient.
Step 3

Roll the mixed dough into a cylinder shape.

A long, cylindrical roll of pale dough rests on a pink silicone baking mat. The mat features concentric circles with size markings in centimeters and illustrations of food items like a chef's hat, a rolling pin, and various fruits and vegetables. The dough appears smooth and evenly rolled. This image likely depicts a stage in baking or cooking, after the dough has been kneaded and shaped.
Step 4

Divide the long dough into 6 small portions by hand, trying to keep them equal in size.

Six roughly equal portions of pale dough are arranged on a pink silicone baking mat. They are oblong in shape, somewhat resembling thick, short logs. The mat has concentric circles marked with measurements in both centimeters and inches, along with illustrations of food-related items. This image shows a step in a baking process where the dough has been divided in preparation for shaping individual pieces.
Step 5

Flatten each portion into a disc shape.

Two hands are working with portions of pale dough on a pink silicone baking mat. Two pieces of dough have been flattened into circles, while two more oblong pieces remain unshaped. The hands are in the process of shaping another piece, pinching it into a thicker form. The mat features concentric circles with measurement markings in inches and centimeters, and illustrations of food-related objects. This image captures a moment in the preparation of baked goods, where the dough portions are being shaped.
Step 6

Design your preferred patterns on the dough using seeds and spices.

Six round pieces of dough are arranged on a pink silicone baking mat. Each piece is decorated with a variety of small seeds and grains, and a star anise in the center. The seeds and grains vary in color and type, creating different patterns on each dough circle. The mat has concentric circles with measurement markings and food-related illustrations. These appear to be decorative flatbreads or cookies ready for baking.
Step 7

Leave to dry for 7 days, and your seed mosaic decoration is complete!

Six round pieces of dough, decorated with seeds, grains, and star anise, are arranged on a white rectangular tray. Each piece has a star anise at its center and is surrounded by a decorative pattern of various small seeds and grains. The tray sits on a light wood surface. These appear to be small flatbreads or cookies decorated with edible seeds and spices, ready for baking.
