Ice Painting

Artistic Adventures

Ages: 3-5

Grownup needed

Ever wondered what it's like to paint on ice? This fascinating experiment allows children to unleash their creativity by painting with watercolours on ice. As the ice melts, the paint flows and spreads, creating magical patterns of interweaving colours on the icy surface. This activity not only sparks their imagination but also enhances their sensory development and nurtures their curiosity about natural phenomena.

Materials Needed

  • Plate
  • Ice cubes
  • Watercolour paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint palette
Arranged on a light wood-grain surface are several art supplies. A white, bear-shaped dish holds two small, clear containers, likely for water or mixing mediums. Next to it lies a small blue paintbrush with a tan bristle tip. A white, flower-shaped paint palette with small wells for paint sits to the right of the brush. Three small, unopened tubes of paint or glue, featuring gray and white packaging, are grouped together at the far right. This image depicts a set of materials ready for a painting or craft project.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Squeeze the paint onto the palette.

A white, flower-shaped paint palette rests on a light wood-grain table. Small dabs of blue and yellow paint are in two of the palette's wells. A hand holding a small blue paintbrush with a tan bristle tip is dipping the brush into the yellow paint, preparing to mix or apply the color. This close-up image suggests the beginning stages of a painting or craft activity.
Step 2

Using a paintbrush or your fingers, start painting on the ice!

Two ice cubes rest on a small, white, bear-shaped dish placed on a light wooden surface. One ice cube is clear, while the other has thin, orange lines and a small pool of melted yellow liquid surrounding it. A portion of another white dish is visible in the bottom right corner of the frame.
Step 3

Try adding different colours and temperatures of paint to see what happens!

Two small, clear containers, resembling shot glasses, sit on a white, bear-shaped dish placed on a light wood-grain surface. The container on the left holds a vibrant green liquid, which has slightly spilled onto the dish, creating a green puddle. The container on the right holds a bright orange liquid, similarly spilling onto the dish and forming an orange puddle. The containers appear to have some texture or cracking on their surfaces. This image likely depicts a science experiment or a colorful art project involving liquid dyes.
