This is a simple and enjoyable parent-child DIY project—creating a bat with flapping wings! With just paper, glue, and a few easy steps, you can make a paper bat dance through the air.

Materials Needed

  • Black card paper
  • Drinking straw
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Yarn
  • Ruler
  • Hot glue gun
  • Stick-on eyes
Arranged on a light wood-grain surface are the materials for a craft project. From left to right, there's a sheet of black construction paper, a black straw or stick, a pencil, a pair of blue-handled scissors, two googly eyes, a ball of black yarn or string, a yellow hot glue gun, and a clear plastic ruler. These items appear to be laid out in preparation for assembly.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Draw a bat on the black card paper using a pencil.

On a piece of black construction paper, a hand draws the outline of a bat with a pencil. The bat is positioned centrally with its wings spread, and the pencil is actively tracing the lower portion of the bat's body. The background is a light wood-grain surface, and a second hand is partially visible at the lower left, holding the paper in place.
Step 2

Use scissors to cut out the bat along the pencil lines.

A pair of hands is cutting out a bat shape from black construction paper. The bat outline, drawn in pencil, is visible on the paper, and blue-handled scissors are in the process of cutting along the edge of one wing. The background is a light wood-grain surface.
Step 3

Stick the eyes onto the bat's head.

A cut-out of a black construction paper bat lies on a light wood-grain surface. The bat has outstretched wings, pointed ears, and two large googly eyes, giving it a simple, childlike appearance.
Step 4

Cut two pieces of yarn that are 10cm longer than your straw.

Two lengths of black yarn or string are laid parallel to each other on a light wood-grain surface. They are positioned horizontally across the center of the image, with a small gap between them.
Step 5

Thread both pieces of yarn through the straw and apply hot glue to one end of the straw.

Two hands are shown working on a craft project against a light wood-grain background. One hand holds a black stick or straw, while the other hand operates a yellow hot glue gun. A small amount of black yarn is attached to the top of the stick, indicating that the glue gun is being used to adhere the yarn to the stick.
Step 6

As shown in the picture, glue the straw with hot glue to the middle of the bat's body.

Two hands hold a simple bat puppet against a light wood-grain background. The bat is made of black construction paper with large googly eyes and a piece of black yarn attached below its face. A black stick or straw is visible behind the yarn, suggesting it's used as a handle for the puppet.
Step 7

As illustrated, use hot glue to attach each piece of yarn to the bat's wings.

A partially completed bat puppet is shown against a light wood-grain background. The bat, made of black construction paper with googly eyes, has a black stick or straw attached as a handle. A piece of black yarn is strung from the stick and is being held by a hand, which appears to be in the process of attaching it to the bat's wingtips to create a mechanism for moving them.
Step 8

Now, pull the two pieces of yarn at the bottom of the straw, and watch the bat's wings flap!

A hand holds a completed bat puppet against a white background decorated with small, colorful felt shapes of stars, circles, and flowers. The bat is made of black construction paper, has large googly eyes, and is attached to a black stick or straw handle. Black yarn connects the handle to the bat's wings, allowing them to be manipulated.
