Grownup needed

Apple printing is a classic process art activity for preschoolers. It's incredibly simple to set up, and children can enjoy hours of play, art, and fun. It's a brilliant activity that stimulates multiple senses and allows children to explore various early learning concepts through the process.

Materials Needed

  • White paper
  • fruit knife
  • apple
  • paint
  • paintbrush
  • marker pens
  • googly eyes
Art supplies are arranged on a light woodgrain table, suggesting preparation for an art project. A blank sheet of white paper sits on the left. A small paring knife with a gray handle lies to the right of the paper, followed by a red and yellow apple. Next to the apple are several small tubes of paint or glue, a paintbrush with a blue handle, and two markers or pens. This flat lay composition indicates the materials gathered for a creative activity, likely involving the apple as a subject.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Using a fruit knife, cut the apple in half, trying to keep the cut surface as smooth as possible. This step needs adult help - be careful to avoid injury.

Two hands are shown on a light woodgrain surface, in the process of cutting an apple. One hand holds the apple steady while the other hand uses a small paring knife with a gray handle to slice into it. The apple is red and yellow and the knife is positioned near the top center of the fruit. The focus is on the action of cutting the apple.
Step 2

Squeeze paint onto the cut surface of the apple and use a paintbrush to cover the entire cut surface with paint.

On a light woodgrain surface, two hands are shown using a cut apple as a stamp. One hand holds a half of an apple, cut side up, which has been coated in red paint. The other hand holds a paintbrush with a dark handle and is applying more red paint to the cut surface of the apple, ensuring it's evenly covered for stamping.
Step 3

Take out the white paper and press the painted apple surface onto it.

Two hands are positioned above a blank sheet of white paper on a light woodgrain table. One hand rests lightly on the edge of the paper, while the other hand holds a red and yellow apple. The apple is positioned near the paper, as if about to be used for printing or stamping. The scene is set for an art activity, likely apple printing.
Step 4

Lift the apple stamp up, and you've successfully printed an apple! Now continue using different colours to fill up the white paper.

On a light woodgrain table, a piece of white paper displays a fresh, bright red apple print. A hand holds a cut half of an apple, also coated in red paint, just above the paper, suggesting the apple was used to create the print. Another hand is visible, lightly touching the paper. The scene clearly depicts apple printing in progress.
Step 5

Patiently wait for the paint on the paper to dry, then stick googly eyes onto your apple prints.

A white sheet of paper on a light woodgrain table displays several apple prints made with red and green paint. Two cut apple halves, one red and one green, sit above the paper, indicating the tools used for the printing. One of the green apple prints has googly eyes attached, creating a simple face. The arrangement showcases a finished apple printing craft project.
Step 6

Use marker pens to add decorations to your apples, and your apple stamp artwork is complete!

On a light woodgrain table, a white sheet of paper features several red and green apple prints, each adorned with googly eyes and simple, drawn-on arms and legs, giving them the appearance of dancing or moving apples. Above the paper lie two cut apple halves, one red and one green, the tools used to create the prints. This charming scene showcases a completed apple printing art project for children.
