Table Tennis Ball Night Light

Artistic Adventures

Ages: 3-5

Less than 30 minutes

Grownup needed

Two decorative illuminated spheres sit on a wooden surface against a dark background. Each sphere rests on a short, cylindrical base that emits a warm, yellow light. The spheres themselves are translucent and contain embedded floral patterns. The sphere on the left has a mix of green, orange, and red floral designs, while the sphere on the right features primarily orange and red floral patterns. The light from the bases illuminates the spheres from below, highlighting the floral designs and creating a soft, ambient glow.

This is a delightful art project that even the youngest children can participate in. These cosy and creative night lights not only decorate your room but also help children move around safely at night, increasing their sense of security.

Materials Needed

  • Plate
  • Battery-operated tealight
  • Table tennis ball
  • Paint
  • Scissors
An overhead flatlay image shows various craft supplies arranged on a light wood grain surface. A rectangular white tray occupies the top left corner. To its right, two small white LED tea lights are positioned above two white polystyrene balls. Below the balls are three small tubes of watercolor paint in yellow, green, and red. A pair of black scissors lies to the right of the paints. The arrangement suggests preparation for a craft project involving painting the polystyrene balls.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Using scissors, make a large hole in the table tennis ball (adult assistance required).

Two hands are shown manipulating a white polystyrene ball and a pair of scissors against a light wood-grain background. One hand holds the ball securely while the other hand uses the scissors to make a small cut or notch in the ball's surface. The focus is on the process of modifying the ball with the scissors.
Step 2

Squeeze some paint onto the plate, being careful not to use too much at once.

A white rectangular tray sits on a light wood-grained surface. Several small dabs of paint in red, yellow, blue, and green have been squeezed onto the tray's surface. The dabs vary slightly in size and shape. The image suggests an overhead view of a simple painter's palette ready for use.
Step 3

Place the pierced table tennis ball on the plate and gently tilt the plate to roll the ball around, coating it with paint.

Two hands hold a white rectangular tray above a light wood-grained surface. On the tray, a white ball, partially decorated with streaks and dabs of red, yellow, blue, and green paint, rests amidst more paint streaks and splatters in the same colors. The scene appears to depict a work in progress, likely a craft project involving decorating the ball.
Step 4

Once the table tennis ball is dry, place it over the tealight.

Against a light wood-grain background, two hands are shown assembling a small decorative light. One hand holds a white cylindrical base, possibly an LED tea light, while the other hand positions a small sphere decorated with orange and yellow paint onto the base. In the background, another similarly decorated sphere already sits atop a base. The image captures the process of creating these small, colorful lights.
Step 5

Switch on the tealight and admire your artistic creation!
