A small, artificial Christmas tree is decorated with miniature knitted hats and shiny rose-gold ornaments. The hats are red and blue, each topped with a pom-pom. Bits of white fluffy material, likely representing snow, are tucked among the branches. The tree is set against a plain, off-white background.

We need something fluffy to help us through winter. These adorable handmade woolly hat crafts not only decorate your holiday season but also make wonderful gifts for family and friends. You could even start a small business selling them as bag or key charms!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn
  • paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • pencil
  • ruler
An assortment of craft supplies is arranged on a light woodgrain surface. Three balls of yarn in varying shades of blue and purple sit at the top. Below them are a blank white sheet of paper, a pair of scissors with dark handles, a pencil, a roll of yellow tape, and a clear plastic ruler. The image suggests preparation for a crafting project.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Using the pencil and ruler, draw three 6cm x 10cm rectangles on white paper.

A piece of white paper lies on a light woodgrain table. Lightly drawn lines divide the paper into three equal vertical sections. Labels indicate the dimensions of one section: 6cm wide and 10cm tall. The image appears to show the first steps in preparing a paper craft project.
Step 2

Cut out the drawn rectangles along the edges.

Two hands are shown on a light woodgrain background. One hand holds a piece of white paper that has been marked with lines dividing it into three sections. The other hand holds a pair of scissors and is in the process of cutting along one of the lines.
Step 3

Next, mark points every 1cm along the 6cm edge of the cut rectangles, then fold the 10cm edges inward along these guide points.

Two hands fold a strip of white paper in half lengthwise against a light woodgrain background. In the upper right corner, a diagram illustrates the folding process. The diagram shows a square divided into horizontal sections with dashed lines, and a red curved arrow indicates folding the bottom 1cm section upwards.
Step 4

Secure the folded paper strips with tape.

Two hands hold a thin strip of yellow tape with a white backing strip against a light woodgrain background. The hands are gently pulling the tape, likely to separate the backing from the adhesive side.
Step 5

Roll up the paper strip and overlap the ends by 1cm, securing with tape.

Two hands hold a small, folded piece of bright yellow material, possibly tape or paper, formed into a slightly irregular octagonal shape against a light woodgrain background. The object has a small opening in the center.
Step 6

Take out the yarn and cut it into 15cm lengths. You'll need 24 pieces in total.

On a light woodgrain surface, a ball of blue yarn sits in the bottom left corner, with a strand extending to the right alongside a clear plastic ruler. The strand measures approximately 15cm. Above the ruler, a separate bundle of shorter, cut pieces of the same blue yarn is arranged. This suggests materials being prepared for a craft project, likely involving yarn tassels or fringe.
Step 7

Fold each yarn piece in half, and as shown, pinch the ends with your right hand, thread the yarn through the ring from the inside, pull through and knot. Patiently repeat this process until the ring is full of yarn.

Against a light woodgrain background, two hands are shown manipulating a piece of blue yarn around a small, bright yellow ring or disc. The yarn is doubled over, and the hands appear to be in the process of tying or wrapping it around the yellow object. This suggests a crafting activity, possibly the initial steps in making a tassel, pom-pom, or other yarn-based decoration.
Step 8

Choose a different coloured yarn and cut a 20cm length. Fold it in half and tie a knot at the end.

Two hands hold a length of white yarn or string against a light woodgrain background. A simple overhand knot has been tied near the right hand, and a small loop is formed near the left hand. The hands appear to be gently pulling the yarn taut. This image likely depicts a stage in a crafting or knot-tying process.
Step 9

Thread the knotted yarn piece through the yarn-covered ring and pinch the remaining yarn to adjust the knot length.

On a light woodgrain background, a hand holds a small, ring-shaped object covered in short strands of blue yarn, resembling a pom-pom or tassel. Another hand, on the right side of the image, holds a short piece of white yarn or string. This appears to be a craft project in progress, possibly involving the creation of a yarn-based decoration.
Step 10

Then take another piece of yarn in the same colour as the hat, and tie it at the top of the hat as shown to secure everything. Make sure to pull the string tight so the yarn doesn't unravel.

Two hands are working with a small, fluffy pom-pom made of blue yarn against a light woodgrain background. A piece of white yarn is visible near the top of the pom-pom, suggesting it's being used to tie and secure the shape. The hands are holding the pom-pom gently, likely in the process of tightening the white yarn or adding finishing touches.
Step 11

Finally, use scissors to trim the excess yarn at the hat's top, aiming for a round pom-pom shape.

Against a light woodgrain background, one hand holds a small, blue yarn pom-pom tied with white yarn. Another hand uses a pair of blue-handled scissors to trim the uneven edges of the pom-pom. Small bits of trimmed blue yarn are scattered around the pom-pom on the surface. This image captures the final stages of making a neat, finished pom-pom.
Step 12

Your woolly hat pendant is complete! Try creating different styles using other yarn combinations!

A small, artificial Christmas tree is decorated with miniature knitted hats and rose-gold colored ornaments. Two light blue knitted hats with fluffy pom-poms and one red and white striped knitted Santa hat are hanging on the tree alongside two shiny rose-gold ball ornaments. Fluffy white material, likely representing snow, is tucked among the branches. The backdrop is a plain off-white wall or surface.
