Materials Needed

  • Card paper
  • Coloured origami paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Clear tape
  • Marker pens
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Spray bottle
An assortment of craft supplies lies arranged on a light wooden table. These supplies include a piece of white paper with a light green strip attached to the side, two rolls of clear tape (one started and one new), three fine-tipped markers (blue, white, and orange), a pencil, a pair of scissors, and a clear spray bottle. These items appear to be the materials needed for a craft project.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1

Draw a vase on white card paper using marker pens and colour it as you like.

A piece of white paper on a light wooden table displays a drawing of a rounded vase or jar. The vase is decorated with colorful polka dots and a pink ribbon tied around its neck. A striped orange and yellow band adorns the top of the vase, and small, sparkly yellow stars are drawn on either side. Three white markers with orange, blue, and yellow caps lie next to the paper. A piece of fluffy light blue material with small pastel flower shapes is visible in the top left corner. This image appears to depict a stage in a children's craft project.
Step 2

Above the vase, draw some flower stems using green marker pens.

A drawing of a vase with flowers sits on a piece of white paper placed on a light wood-grain surface. The vase is decorated with colorful polka dots, a pink ribbon tied around the neck, and an orange and yellow striped band at the top. Green lines, representing flower stems, extend upwards from the vase's opening. Small, sparkly yellow stars are drawn on either side. A green marker lies beside the paper, suggesting it was used to draw the stems. A fluffy, light blue material with small pastel flower shapes is partially visible in the top left corner. This image appears to be of a children's art project in progress.
Step 3

Cover the completed drawing entirely with clear tape.

Two hands are applying a sheet of clear adhesive plastic to a piece of white paper. The paper, resting on a light wood-grain surface, features a drawing of a vase filled with green stems. The vase is decorated with colorful polka dots, a pink ribbon, and an orange and yellow striped band. Small yellow stars are drawn on either side. A piece of light blue fluffy material with pastel flower shapes is partially visible in the top left corner. The image seems to depict a stage in a children's craft project, where the drawing is being covered for protection or to create a sticker-like effect.
Step 4

Take the coloured origami paper and fold it in half twice.

Two hands are folding a piece of light pink paper in half against a light wooden background. The paper appears to be square and is being creased to create a card or folded piece. The hands have decorated fingernails. A piece of light blue, fluffy material is partially visible in the top left corner. The image suggests a simple craft or paper-folding activity.
Step 5

Using a pencil, draw a small flower on the folded paper.

On a light wooden table, two hands are shown interacting with a folded piece of light pink paper. One hand holds the paper steady while the other hand draws a simple flower shape with a pencil onto the paper. The hand drawing has decorated fingernails. The image suggests a craft activity, likely card-making or a similar paper project.
Step 6

Cut out the flower shape with scissors, and repeat steps 5-6 with different coloured paper to create multiple flowers.

Several small, simple flower shapes cut from pastel-colored paper are scattered on a light wooden surface. The flowers are in various shades of pink, orange, yellow, green, and purple. A piece of fluffy light blue material is partially visible in the top left corner, also adorned with a few small paper flowers. The image evokes a sense of spring or crafting.
Step 7

Fold the cut-out flowers as shown in the illustration.

Two hands are manipulating a small, pale yellow paper flower shape against a light wood background. Several more of these paper flower cutouts are visible at the top of the frame. The hands are pinching the base of the flower, seemingly in the process of folding or shaping it. A smaller, folded piece of the same paper sits to the upper right, suggesting a step in a craft project involving paper flowers.
Step 8

Apply double-sided tape to the back of the flowers and stick them onto the drawn stems. Ensure the flower openings face upwards.

A piece of white paper on a light wood-grain table displays a children's craft project. Drawn on the paper is a vase decorated with colorful polka dots, a pink ribbon, and an orange and yellow striped rim. Small yellow stars are drawn on either side. Sticking out of the vase are thin green stems with small, folded paper flowers in various pastel colors attached. A piece of light blue fluffy material with pastel flower shapes is partially visible in the top left corner. The image depicts a completed flower-in-a-vase craft.
Step 9

Now take your spray bottle and gently spray water on your flowers. Be careful not to use too much water.

A hand holding a spray bottle is positioned to the left of a children's craft project on a light wooden table. The project, displayed on white paper, features a drawing of a vase decorated with colorful polka dots and a pink ribbon. Small, folded paper flowers in various pastel colors are attached to thin green stems growing from the vase. Small yellow stars are drawn around the vase. A piece of light blue fluffy material and more pastel flower shapes are partially visible in the top left corner. It appears the spray bottle is about to be used on the craft, possibly containing adhesive or a sealant.
Step 10

Watch patiently as your flowers bloom!

A finished children's craft project rests on a light wooden table. The project, created on a sheet of white paper, depicts a vase filled with colorful flowers. The vase is adorned with brightly colored polka dots and a pink ribbon tied around its neck. Small, folded paper flowers in various pastel shades are attached to thin green stems that rise from the vase's opening. Small yellow stars are drawn around the vase, adding to the decorative touch. A piece of fluffy light blue material with pastel flower shapes is partially visible in the top left corner. The image captures the charm and simplicity of a child's artwork.

The Science Behind It:

The 'blooming' effect occurs due to capillary action and paper's absorption properties. Paper is made of fibres that readily absorb water. When water contacts the paper, it travels up the tiny channels between fibres, causing them to expand. The folded petals absorb water and unfold, creating the 'blooming' effect.
