Make spooky Halloween characters sprint through water with this super simple science experiment. Zoom zoom zoom! Floating ghosts, pumpkins, and bats will add some scientific fun to your children's Halloween.

  • Age: 3-5
  • Time: Less than 1 hour

Materials Needed:

  • Printable Templates
  • Scissors
  • Plate
  • Dish Soap
Gather your spooky supplies! A sheet of cute Halloween character templates, a pair of scissors, a bottle of glue, and a pale green plate are all laid out, ready for some frightfully fun crafting. Let's get those spooky creations underway!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Download the printable templates and cut out the patterns, or you can choose to draw your own Halloween design and cut it out.
  2. Getting those spooky shapes ready! A pair of hands carefully holds a paper pumpkin, while another hand holds scissors, poised to make a precise cut. It's all about those spooky details!
  3. Apply dish soap to the back of the cut-out pattern. Remember to apply it to the tail end of the pattern.
  4. Adding the finishing touch! A hand carefully applies a clear adhesive to a paper shape, preparing it to be attached to the pale green plate. It's all coming together splendidly!
  5. Place the side with dish soap on the water surface and watch them go full speed ahead!

The Science Behind It:

Water likes to stick together, while dish soap likes to separate water. Water molecules connect to each other (this is called surface tension), but when you add dish soap to the mix, the water quickly separates. As the water moves, it carries your floating friends along with it.
