For Halloween, we need a bit of adorable spookiness. Let's make fluffy bats, spiders, and pumpkins! You can use them to decorate your room, or turn them into keychains and backpack accessories to create your own ultra-cool Halloween fashion items.
- Age: 6-8
- Time: 30 minutes - 1 hour
- Mess Level: A Bit Messy
- Adult supervision required
Materials Needed:
- Black Cardstock
- Scissors
- Yarn (Black, Yellow)
- Glue
- Red Pipe Cleaners
- Googly Eyes
- Cardboard
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Cut out a U-shaped pattern on the cardboard (as shown in the image below).
- Hold the cardboard cut-out with one hand. Use your other hand to start wrapping the yarn around it, one loop at a time. Be careful not to wrap it too tightly, or it might be difficult to remove from the cardboard later. Wrap as much yarn as possible to ensure the pompom is firm and fluffy.
- Cut a length of yarn and tie it around the middle of the yarn wrapped on the cardboard, as shown in the picture.
- Remove the yarn from the cardboard. Use scissors to cut both ends of the yarn loops (you might need to ask an adult for help). Be careful not to cut the piece of yarn tied around the middle.
- Use circular cardstock to shape your pompom.
- Twist three red pipe cleaners together, secure them in place, then fold out the spider's legs and glue them to the pompom.
- Add eyes, and your spooky one-eyed spider is complete!
- Using the same crafting steps, what other creative works can you make?
Tip:
If you can find tools with a similar shape at home, feel free to use them. Or, can you think of other ways to create a U-shaped yarn wrapping device?
