This experiment is perfect for young little scientists. Children will not only be amazed by the patterns floating on the plate, but there's an even bigger surprise in store—you can copy them from the water and stick them on your skin! In less than a minute, you can create the spookiest Halloween tattoos!

  • Age: 3-5
  • Time: Less than 30 minutes

Materials Needed:

  • Porcelain Plate
  • Whiteboard Markers
  • Water
Against a bright orange background, a simple arrangement of craft supplies is presented. A small, clear plastic cup containing a quantity of clear liquid sits to the left. A white ceramic dish, shaped like a bear's face, is positioned in the centre. To the right of the dish is a black permanent marker. The scene is clean and well-lit, suggesting preparation for a craft project.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Use whiteboard markers to draw spooky patterns like ghosts, spiders, and pumpkins on the porcelain plate.
  2. A white ceramic dish, shaped like a bear's face, rests on a bright orange surface. Several small, black Halloween-themed images—a ghost, bat, spider, pumpkin, and skull—have been drawn onto its surface using a black marker pen, which is also shown in the image. The simple, childlike drawings are neatly executed, creating a charming and festive effect. The overall impression is one of a simple, fun craft project.
  3. Slowly pour a small amount of water onto the plate. When the water touches the patterns, they will start to float. If the patterns don't float completely, slightly tilt the plate.
  4. Tip:

Don't use too much water. If the patterns don't appear, try pouring out the water and using a bit less.

A person's hands are shown against a bright orange background. They are holding a small, white, bear-shaped dish containing several small, black Halloween-themed decorations: a ghost, bat, spider, pumpkin, and skull. A clear plastic cup of water is positioned to the right of the dish. The person carefully pours the water from the cup onto the decorations in the dish, covering them completely. The video then shows the dish with the decorations submerged in water.
  5. You can also use this to make tattoo stickers. Simply find a piece of paper, copy the pattern onto it, and then stick it on your skin. If you don't want them anymore, they can be easily rubbed off. It's great fun, so give it a try!
  6. A small, white, bear-shaped dish is shown on a bright orange background. A single, small, black ghost-shaped sticker has been carefully placed in the centre of the dish. The image is simple and clean, focusing attention on the sticker and its placement within the dish. The contrast between the white dish, black sticker, and orange background is striking and eye-catching.

The Science Behind It:

The ink in whiteboard markers contains smooth liquid silicone. This type of ink is hydrophobic, which means it doesn't like to mix with water. The smooth silicone ink also lacks adhesive, allowing it to float on the water's surface rather than sticking to the plate.
